The AI assistant for electrical design engineers, on WhatsApp

Single-line diagrams, distribution boards, solar PV systems, site meetings: the design is yours. Ugo takes care of your diary, email and project documents, answers you by voice while you’re on site and asks you to confirm before every action.

An AI assistant for electrical design engineers has to know the rhythm of the job: detailed designs to issue, board schedules that change at every meeting, electricians asking questions from site, clients wanting to know when the solar PV goes live. Ugo is a contact on WhatsApp connected to your diary, email and project folders: ask it a question and it answers with what it finds in your files.

You work on industrial units, offices, blocks of flats, rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV, EV charge points. You deal with panel builders, installers, main contractors, electrical wholesalers and, for solar, whoever handles the grid connection application with the network operator. Every job produces schematics, reports, materials lists and, at the end, the Electrical Installation Certificates and test results to keep in the project file. That’s a lot of documents and a lot of people, and you’re the one holding it together.

Ugo doesn’t size cables, select protective devices or check discrimination: you do that with your own software, to BS 7671. Ugo organises: it finds the right revision, summarises the panel builder’s emails, books the site visit, fills in issue letters. Everything it sends or creates goes out after your “Confirm”, and it only works on files in the folder you choose.

What slows down an electrical design engineer

The design is precise. It’s the communication around it that frays.

Board schedules under constant revision

The client adds a circuit, the panel builder proposes a different breaker, the contractor moves a submain. Every change means a revision, and working out who’s using which becomes a job in itself.

Certificates that never arrive

At handover you need the installer’s Electrical Installation Certificates with the schedules of test results. You have to chase them, check they’re complete and file them in the right place, often weeks after the site has closed.

Solar PV with too many parties

Client, installer, panel and inverter supplier, network operator, grant paperwork. Everyone writes separately and you’re the reference point who always has to know where things stand.

Questions from site at any hour

The electrician asks for a cable size or the position of a sub-distribution board while you’re in a meeting. Answering without the latest schematic in front of you is the quickest way to create a mistake.

Quick questions, answers taken from your documents.

The circuit details, read from the latest schedule

The electrician asks for the details of an outgoing way on the main board. You send Ugo a voice note: it reads the circuit schedule in Excel in the project folder and replies with the line and revision date, so you know the figure is the right one.

Chasing the installation certificates

Ask Ugo which completed jobs still have no Electrical Installation Certificate in the file. It checks the folders on Drive, gives you the list and drafts a chaser for each installer, which goes out after your “Confirm”.

  1. Which jobs finished in September still have no EIC in the folder?

  2. In the folders for jobs completed in September, the Electrical Installation Certificate is missing for: 1. Newton Offices Ltd – installer Sale Electrical 2. Conway House – installer Gamble Electrical

  3. Chase both

  4. I’ve drafted two short emails, one to Sale Electrical and one to Gamble Electrical, asking for the Electrical Installation Certificate and schedule of test results so the file can be closed. Shall I send them from your mailbox?

The site visit for a solar PV roof

A company wants solar PV on its roof. Before going, you ask Ugo for a Street View image of the address, to get an idea of the building, and the travel time. Then you book the visit in the first free slot.

  2. Here’s the Street View image of the Rinaldi Furniture address, on Enterprise Way in Huddersfield. Right now it’s about 35 minutes by car from you with traffic.

  3. Book the site visit for Wednesday at 10

  4. Here’s what I’ll do: Create the appointment “Solar PV site visit Rinaldi Furniture” on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:30, at Enterprise Way, Huddersfield. Shall I go ahead?

The reply to a client about a variation

The client sends a long email with three change requests. Ugo sums it up in points, you dictate a two-line reply and it writes it up neatly, with the date of the next schematic revision.

  4. Here’s the reply I’ll send to Andrew Bentley: “Hi Andrew, thanks, noted. We’ll add the two industrial sockets in area B and provision for the charge point in the yard. The revised schematics will follow by Friday 23 October.” Shall I send it?

An electrical design engineer’s day with Ugo

Between site, panel builders and clients, with answers always a message away.

  1. 7:45

Ugo sends you the day’s appointments: site meeting, a detailed design issue, a meeting with the panel builder.

  2. 9:30

At the site meeting you dictate the agreed changes: Ugo adds them to the project’s variations document.

  3. 11:00

An electrician asks for circuit details. Ugo reads them from the board schedule on OneDrive and you answer without going back to the office.

  4. 14:30

Ugo sums up the emails on the Rinaldi solar PV job: panel quote received, installer waiting for dates.

  5. 17:00

You need the issue letter for the detailed design: Ugo fills in the practice template and saves it in the right folder.

  6. 18:00

On Fridays, a scheduled task lists the completed jobs with no installation certificate in the folder.

What to connect to the AI assistant for electrical design engineers

Electrical CAD and design software stay yours. Ugo works on the files and the communication.

Circuit schedules and quantities on OneDrive

Export circuit schedules, materials lists or bills of quantities to Excel. Ugo reads them, adds rows and updates cells once you confirm, and sends you tables as an image that’s easy to read on WhatsApp.

The handover file on Drive

One folder per job with design, variations, installation certificates and attachments. Ugo tells you what’s there and what’s missing, and fills in letter templates with {{client}} and {{site}}.

Manufacturers’ catalogues

With Company websites, Ugo reads the websites of switchgear, inverter and panel manufacturers and summarises stated specifications, with the page it took them from. For the final choice, data sheets are what count.

monday.com for projects

If the practice tracks projects on monday.com, Ugo tells you what’s overdue, changes statuses and dates and posts updates on items, always after you confirm.

FAQ for electrical design engineers

What’s the best software for electrical design engineers?

For the design you need electrical CAD and calculation software kept up to date with BS 7671, and the choice depends on the type of installations you handle. A big part of the job, though, happens outside those programs: revisions, email, site visits, handover documents. Ugo takes care of that part from WhatsApp, without touching your technical software.

Can Ugo size cables or design a solar PV system?

No. Cable sizing, protective device selection, voltage drop and yield estimates are technical calculations that stay with you, along with signing off the design. Ugo reads what you’ve already produced, such as a circuit schedule in Excel, and gives you the figure when you need it. It doesn’t check it or correct it.

Who issues the Electrical Installation Certificate?

Under BS 7671, the Electrical Installation Certificate is completed when the work is finished, with signatures for design, construction and inspection and testing, plus the schedule of test results. For domestic work, building control notification is usually handled through the installer’s competent person scheme. Ugo helps you see which jobs are still missing certificates by checking the folders, and drafts the chasers to installers.

How do I keep board schedule revisions under control?

Always show the revision and date in the title block and the file name, keep a drawing register up to date and move superseded revisions to a subfolder. That way the panel builder and installer work from the right version. Ugo reads the register on Drive or OneDrive and tells you which revision is current, even when you’re out of the office.

Is my industrial clients’ data protected?

Ugo only replies to verified WhatsApp numbers, its servers and database are in Frankfurt, and it only works on files in the folder you choose in the portal. No email goes out and no file is created without your “Confirm”. For clients with confidentiality requirements, you can simply leave their folders unconnected.
